Broad Daylight and it's "shequel" Shine On Sweet Starlet are a little different from the normal BMB fare, as these are not the kind of movies with a script to follow or plot to think about. And, although much of what we've reviewed thus far has featured at least one woman taking her top off, none of those movies can compete with the quantity - and quality of said quantity - of beautiful scantily clad Betties, getting more scantily clad as the seconds whiz by, featured here. This swankily packaged double DVD release of self-dubbed punk rock stag loops hearkens back to a more innocent style of striptease, when the strip and the tease was each of equal importance. Finesse, flair and a well honed personal style was the call of the day, and the lovely ladies captured by the Super 8 camera(s) of Victoria Renard and Jon Michael McCarthy (aka JMM) are definitely well versed in the old school and share the filmmakers' reverence for the burlesque of yesteryear. Whether you like 'em svelte or zaftig; demure or daring; blonde, brunette or redheaded, there is truly something for every taste contained herein. Add in a soundtrack of modern garage rock (from the likes of The Woggles, Gore Gore Girls, Demolition Dollrods, Sons Of Hercules & Reigning Sound to name a few) and occasionally strange settings for such activities (out in the street, on a pier, in the woods) and you've got yourself quite the party. Each of the films are thematically similar but, at the same time, each has it's own identity and could be enjoyed together or separately. Shine On Sweet Starlet was made first, in 1998, and was filmed in atmospheric black and white; Broad Daylight was made more recently (2004) and is in color but the Super 8 aspect helps keep much of the "vintage" feeling intact. The folks at Guerrilla Monster went the extra mile to stuff this wild bikini with a number of "sextras" too - like short films (including one that features a lass by the name of Miss Satanica writhing around in broken glass while Joe Coleman stands on her belly), a "making of" segment, a JMM demo reel, and photo galleries by JMM, Renard, Dan Ball, Winston Eggleston and Bunny Yeager. Now I know some of you out there are thinking, 'Does the world really need that much footage of cute punk rock chicks in lingerie…' Um, actually, nevermind; I forgot who our readership was for a second there. NONE of you are thinking that. Even a heterosexual (well, mostly) woman like myself finds it is hard to argue the allure of a tattooed vixen in fringed hot pants shakin' what her mama gave her. For those who don't agree, allow me to suggest you spend your time watching something else. And to paraphrase something once said by my C&C sister Miss Virginia Eve Plum: Don't be a punk rock stag loop hater! Be a punk rock stag loop congratulator.
