Have you ever returned from the video store with what you think is a movie you've never seen before, only to discover it's actually a movie you have seen before; one that's been renamed, re-released and, in some cases, repackaged to look like a totally different movie? I know the Kommandant and I have. (Al Adamson, I'm looking at you.) Of course no one person can be made solely responsible for this film phenomenon, but the B-Movie community as a whole appear to be the genre to encourage and embrace the rampant use of the letters AKA the most.
Based on my unscientific study, this seems to be mostly a '60s & '70s thang. I've seen very few "underground" films re-released under different titles in recent years. (Keeping in mind that, for example, a movie with a Spanish title that is later re-released in the States with a translated title doesn't count. It's still the same title—or it should be if the producers hired a decent translator.) Out of the 45 films reviewed on the site prior to today's date (March 7th, 2005), 29 of them were made pre-1990 and, out of those, 18 have at least one alternate title. As illustrated by my handy and somewhat visually pleasing grid located underneath this paragraph. What does all this prove? Nothing, really; I just thought it might make a fun feature. However, I will report back to you should I uncover any conspiracy theories, gather any other important information, or just feel the need to re-visit the subject.
