Love Toy
[Something Weird]

1971; color

Directed by Doris Wishman

Starring: Bernard Marcel, Pat Happel & Vic Lester

Unlike Doris Wishman's early nudie cutie films or her mid-'60s black and white roughies, Love Toy sees Wishman (or as she originally billed herself for this one, Louis Silverman) making a decided turn toward actual pornography. Being the somewhat prudish lady she was rumored to be however, she stopped short of "going all the way" - at least as far as the movies I've seen thus far in my research. This selection certainly has the seedy and seamy feel of good old fashioned Times Square adult entertainment but the sex acts are all simulated and in some cases, just implied. And I, for one, am glad for that. Anywhoo, things all start off innocently enough for our pretty teenaged heroine, Chris, but in Doris' world even the most innocent situation can turn into a bad trip down life's lowest roads. Thusly Chris goes from sleeping peacefully in her sheer black robe to learning she's about to become the sex slave of a pervert who won her in a card game from her gambling addicted father in a matter of minutes - and that's just the start of her problems. Cause this guy is no regular card sharking pervert on the prowl—of course! He's completely mental; not to mention rather unattractive. Still, a bewildered Chris agrees to honor her father's debt and let the dude (his name is Alex, not that it matters) screw her in her own bed. Maybe she was hypnotized by his puzzling and non-sensical speech detailing his feelings about cats and his ability to make saucers of milk appear out of nowhere. Or, whatever, maybe she's just loose. Either way Alex has soon got her involved in various role playing scenarios (as his pet, his mother, his daughter, his wife, his mistress, his pony and his jockey) like a poorly trained and not well paid prostitute. Meanwhile, in the living room, Alex's wife (Mary) has been spending time with Chris' father, who she tied to a chair earlier. And by "spending time with" I mean alternately burning him in the face with lit cigarettes and giving him full contact lap dances. These sick sin-arios continue to play themselves out until, ultimately, everyone ends up in Chris' room for one final act of incestuous psycho-sexual deviance. But, thankfully, before the quartet can do the dirty deed Chris awakens to realize it was all just an extremely extreme dream sequence. She was napping peacefully in her sheer black robe all along and all is well. That is until she hears a rap at her door and a strange man enters and starts telling her about this card game he just finished playing with her father… The end. Love Toy is definitely one of the more curious entries into Wishman's filmography and has very few strong points to speak of, aside from it's mind bending depravity. On the other hand, some us enjoy a bit of mind bending depravity now and then. If you are not one of those people, you might wanna choose something else with love or toy in the title for your viewing pleasure.
